More on Cheap Food

I did watch the programme but only managed to watch part of it. I am going to try and see it later this weekend. However, I did see enough to know that part of the programme followed two families who were trying to lower their monthly food bills. One of the families bought the cheap supermarket lines of food and did save but decided at the end of the month that the only thing in that line they would continue to buy was the fruit and vegetables. The other family gave up the supermarket and started shopping at a local butcher for their meat and at the town market for much of the rest of their shop. They managed to save a considerable amount as well. However, for all of them, their savings also came from finishing what they had in their fridges and cupboards before buying more. They all planned better and had less wastage.

Using up the pantry items is good but what happens with their budgets when the old pantry items are all used up?

This comment does not really belong with this post but don't know where else to make the comment. I hear Nigela Lawson interviewed on NPR this am...whenever I hear her, I get the urge to run to the kitchen. This morning the inspiring recipes were a very easy corn and tortilla soup as well as a pear and chocolate bread pudding. I liked her sensible approach. Will find the recipes on NPR site later this week and post links here. mj

I'm following the example of this food program and trying to eat out of our cupboards (and fridge and fridge top freezer) to reduce inventory. We had a delicious Mexican combo plate today. Yesterday it was veggie pattie with stir fried onions and red peppers and cheesy sweet potato wedges. Tomorrow it will be cole slaw and...need to check on what's left in stock. There's a chicken carcas and some asparagus stalks in the freezer and they are destined to be soup soon. mj
